Abstract
The American Red Cross and other nonprofit organizations depend greatly on volunteers to complete the mission of their organization. As volunteers enter young adulthood they are faced with the decision to continue as a volunteer or end their volunteer experience with the organization. The Functional Theory assumes that whether or not a volunteer is likely to remain with the organization depends on the successful match of needs and goals to the experiences offered to the volunteer. Understanding the motivational reasons why young adults volunteer will aid in recruitment and retention tactics used by the Red Cross organization to maintain a steady volunteer workforce. The purpose of this study is to understand the motivational reasons for volunteering and satisfaction level of current American Red Cross volunteers between the ages of 18 to 24 in the Midwest.
