Abstract

"Blurring" seen in images is due to poor performance of the imaging system, which in turn leads to the degradation of overall spatial image quality. This was the case with two of the detectors in Band 2 of the Landsat-4 Thematic Mapper. The Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) was used to characterize the spatial quality of these two detectors relative to other well behaved detectors. Landsat Internal Calibrator (IC) pulse data were selected, aligned and analyzed to estimate the relative MTF response. The relative response indicated the amount of degradation in these detectors with respect to a detector with better response. Image restoration techniques were implemented to reduce the amount of degradation, the blurring. Restoration methodology was enhanced by concatenating a Butterworth filter with relative MTF response to avoid the abrupt filter discontinuity, which yielded improved results. The results from this work demonstrate the practical applicability of the method to estimate and restore poor MTF response of degraded detectors and maintain overall spatial quality of the satellite imagery.
