Abstract

In this collection, I explore what it means socially and rhetorically for a woman to enter the contemporary rhetorical conversation of travel and travel writing. In briefly surveying women's participation within the rhetorical tradition, I offer a fuller understanding of the challenges and importance of contemporary women travel writers contributing to that tradition, especially as they encounter issues of place and gender. Furthermore, I focus specifically on the lyric essay, which I argue to be a kindred spirit for women in their writing and traveling, as all three exist as transgressive on some level.
