Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristic differences of Resourceful Living participants who attended an education program on a short-term basis (one or two months) versus those who attended the sessions on a long-term basis (three or more months). The study was to also determine if the potential characteristic differences between short-term and long-term participants were situational barriers which may have impacted the length of participation in Resourceful Living. Data were collected through the files and records at the South Dakota Department of Social Services. The sample consisted of Resourceful Living participants who first attended Resourceful Living between January, 1990, and August, 1991. Participants were categorized as short-term or long-term participants according to the number of months attended during 1990 and 1991. Chi-square analysis displayed the only significant relationship was the relationship between the length of Resourceful Living participation and the current AFDC status. The data from the study demonstrated that Resourceful Living participants did not continue attending Resourceful Living due to a change in their AFDC status.
