Abstract
The two existing methods for economic earthwork allocations are Mass Diagram and Linear Programming. This paper illustrates and compares the usefulness of the two methods. The mass diagram method is more flexible than the linear programming method; however, the linear programming method provides more capabilities than the mass diagram method. A new mass diagram method is presented in this paper in order to extend the capability of mass diagram method. The additional borrow/disposal sites are taken into account by adding a secondary Y-coordinate to the mass diagram. The improved mass diagram method is applied to a numerical example. Computer programs, EARTH, DISTAN and MASS, which perform necessary calculation and analysis, are developed. The possible extensions of the improved mass diagram method are recommended.
