Abstract
Preservation at places of unique physical and cultural characteristics is desirable. Attributes of Badlands National Park in South Dakota are assessed as to uniqueness. Human-environmental relations are explored in a geographical context. The environmental history and historical geography of the park are discussed in relation to the definition of the park as a Special Place. Recommendations are made to preserve Special Places and the Badlands as a Special Place.
