Abstract
The need for public relations in academic libraries has often gone unrecognized. Library directors from 13 academic libraries in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota were interviewed about public relations activities in their libraries. Many of the directors were uncomfortable with their role as public relations practitioner for their libraries while others seemed to grasp the importance of a strong public image and made public relations a priority for themselves and their libraries. Public relations activities in each library were discussed with an emphasis on unique efforts. The perceptions of the library directors on the effectiveness of public relations on seven factors such as budget and use of the library were analyzed.
