Abstract
This study is a structural analysis of the film, Braveheart. The film is analyzed using Vladamir Propp' s fairy tale functions as found in his 1968 book, Morphology of the Folktale. This study examines the presence of fairy tale function in Braveheart. Fairy tales are ancient and hold appeal for audiences. Are there properties of fairy tale in the motion picture Braveheart? Is the presence of fairy tale elements in Brave heart part of the reason audiences have embraced it? This thesis introduces the problem, reviews literature in the field of fairy tale studies and surrounding film, especially Brave heart. Propp's Morphology of the Folktale (1968) is used to find fairy tale functions in the movie. Results and conclusions are that Braveheart is not a fairy tale, but it contains fairy tale functions according to Proppian theory.
