Abstract
Quality, according to Dr. Kaoru Ishikawa, begins and ends with training (Tuttle 78). Of Deming's 14 Points for Management which outline his quality philosophy, two points address training issues (Deming). The purpose of this tutorial is to teach process capability concepts, including the assumptions made when doing a process capability study and the calculations necessary to perform a process capability study. The tutorial also informs engineers and managers of the applications of process capability indices including their use in prevention of nonconforming product, continuous improvement efforts, prioritization of process improvements, assessment of location and variability of processes, and audits of process performance (Kane 49).
