Abstract
A convergence of factors enabled Ida Sherman Womeldorf to forge a successful, if unlikely, career as a Baptist evangelist and preacher in Deadwood, South Dakota and other sites in the American West. Actualizing her ministerial path in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were her own personal qualities, the rise of the Progressive reform movement, the local autonomy practiced by her denomination, and openness in the West to her unconventional role. Her story as it intersects with the mores and movements of her time and place builds upon and broadens the historical narrative of evangelical women in ministry.
