Abstract

Ever wonder – what's out in space? Often one might hear that it is a lot of empty space.  Yet there are objects and bodies of objects out there to explore.

Or maybe wondering “how far objects are apart from each other?”  What does the scale of distance between objects look like in space?

The Pocket Solar System, an activity developed by the MN Science Center, NASA and NISE, explores the scale of our solar system’s planets and visually shows the scalable distances between planets (NASA, 2017). Building a scale model can be a huge challenge because of the vast distances in space and the very large size differences involved in the planets. This activity uses receipt paper to illustrate the planetary scale for distances and can also include scalable sizes.
