Abstract
Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of postweaning diets on pig performance, nutrient digestibility, intestinal morphology and function of pigs weaned at 3 to 4 weeks of age. Experiment 1 involved two trials which evaluated the effect of simple vs complex postweaning diets on pig performance, nutrient absorption, incidence of diarrhea, bacterial and viral proliferation and changes in intestinal morphology of weaned pigs. Pig performance was variable when pigs were fed either a simple or complex diet. Type of diet (simple vs complex) did not affect (P>.05) changes in intestinal morphology, Escherichia coli (E. co//) proliferation and incidence or severity of diarrhea. The change in intestinal morphology, feed intake and rota virus proliferation was affected (P.05) in changes in intestinal morphology. Day postweaning did affect (P.05) incidence of diarrhea. Substituting soy protein concentrate for soybean meal did not alter (P>.05) postweaning performance or intestinal morphology but did improve (P<.05) dry matter and nitrogen digestibility. Although there were some advantages to feeding either oats or soy protein concentrate, ultimately a simple cornSBM diet supported similar postweaning performance.
