Abstract
Objective: Evaluate the teen-taught KidQuest program provided to 5th and 6th grade elementary students living in rural South Dakota (SD) by assessment of anthropometrics and biochemical measurements.
Design: A quasi-experimental design with base Hne and post- intervention data collection from one case and one control school.
Setting: Two elementary schools in rural SD.
Participants: Fifth and sixth-grade students (N = 87) from two elementary schools.
Intervention: KidQuest, a six lesson nutrition and physical activity program, was taught by teen teachers to the intervention group participants.
Main Outcome Measures: Participants' body mass index (BMI-), waist circumference, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), and triglycerides.
Analysis: Two-sample t-test was used for comparison of group means and chi-square was used to compare BMI percentiles. The level of significance was P =0.05.
Results: Mean HDL decreased within the intervention group and increased in the control group. This change was statistically significant (P = 0.006). No significant difference was found with change in BMI, waist circumference, and total cholesterol.
Conclusions: Data from this study suggests that teen-taught KidQuest was associated with a significant difference in the change from pre to post total cholesterol in the intervention group. This was clinically significant since four students improved their value into normal range; however, one student moved from normal to abnormal. There was a significant decrease in mean HDL between the intervention and control groups. All other measurements were not statistically different. Future studies should evaluate the impact of the teen-taught KidQuest program using a larger sample size.
