Abstract
The present study explores the literary and cultural themes surrounding the deposition of Richard II and the subsequent reign of Henry IV. Discussion focuses on the two alliterative fragments Richard the Redeless and Mum and the Sothsegger. Specifically, the study explores how these poems adhere to the mirror for princes tradition and reflect changing trends in literacy throughout the 14th-centruy. Moreover, it demonstrates how the poems function as an extension of baronial opposition directed towards Richard II and Henry IV.
