Abstract
This thesis is a comparative study of theme and form in two secular poets' rejection of authoritarian worldviews. Li Bo in 8th century China chose the natural human values--wine, nature, eros, pleasure--over the rational pragmatic politics of the Confucian bureaucracy. Omar Khayyam in 11th century Persia had the same conflict with the Moslem Sufi power structure. This thesis will argue how and why poets from such different times and places discovered the same natural bases for authentic human nature.
