Abstract
This thesis discusses the genre conventions of creative nonfiction travel writing with the goal of exposing five salient elements of the genre. The genre is broad and inclusive; its topics cross-reference with other fields of study but five elements of the genre stay consistent. These elements include travel, physical landscape, self-identity, people and culture, and history to create a sense of place and reflect the traveler's experiences in a place. iii Within creative nonfiction travel writing, I exercise the five elements of travel writing to explore my travel experiences. Therefore, by utilizing the genre's forms and styles, along with different narrative themes, I enter the conversation of travel and travel writing by reflecting on self-identity, expectations of place, and the influence of place on the traveler. Finally, I discuss the process that connects the research and the creative writing component to explain how my creative writing enters into the conversations of creative nonfiction travel writing. Previous coursework and recent graduate coursework along with constant reading and writing influence the process of writing creative nonfiction travel writing.
