Abstract
This thesis explores the potential merit of The Random Character Generator (RCG), an original system for creating characters for play scripts, as a means of playwrighting and, specifically, as a writing exercise for use in the teaching of playwrighting. University instructors of playwrighting (n=l 7) were asked to review this system and evaluate its usefulness for novice playwrights, as a means of teaching playwrighting, and as a means of creating a play. Participants were also asked demographic questions regarding their education and experience as instructors. iv Responses to the usefulness of the RCG varied, although there were some indications that similar methods were being used in some university courses in playwrighting.
