Abstract

Clearly, little has been written about the possible influence of any one specific French author on Cather's work. One author, though, whose fiction and whose theory of fiction writing very closely resemble those of Cather is the nineteenth century novelist and master of short fiction, Guy de Maupassant. In light of the fact that virtually nothing has been written about a probable influence of Maupassant on Cather's early work, a careful study is called for to show the similarities in these 5 authors' critical statements and in their short fiction, particularly in those stories which focus on the supernatural and naturalistic.
