Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of verifying nasogastric (NG) tube placement in preterm neonates using three methods: the visualization of gastric aspirates, auscultation of an air bolus, and pH measurement of aspirates, when compared to x-ray confirmation. Nurses have an obligation to use the most accurate and least stressful method of placement and verification of feeding tubes. Nurses are responsible for checking the feeding tube placement after initial insertion and prior to each feeding (Metheny, et al., 1994). Information derived from this study will assist nurses in choosing the appropriate verification method.
