Abstract

This analysis compares two cinematic productions of Romeo and Juliet, Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 version and Baz Luhrmann's 1996 version. This study compares the two films by examining three specific scenes: opening, ball to balcony, and tomb. It further examines the differences and similarities between each film and Shakespeare's original text. This study examines the process and effect of contemporizing Shakespearean texts. It also questions the use and effect of Shakespearean films in the academic world. This study includes appendices with film terms, photographs, and Internet links to Romeo and Juliet lesson plans to aid in the understanding of the analysis.
